    hi all

had a look at my mates audi A4 today he said he's getting a grinding on the rear so i had a look at passenger side, could only see through the alloy and there was plenty of meat left on the pads went to drivers side and it's down to the metal.

said i could put a new set of pads in for him but needs doing ASAP before the discs are screwed, but i'm thinking now his caliper is sticking on hence the grossly uneven wear on the pads.

had a look at a few threads and i've seen quite a few saying something similar with the drivers side and after they've changed the caliper having the same fault. then some other threads suggested the hand brake cable needs changing.

    any thoughts on possible cause?

The unworn side is probably seized, a strip down will show why-normally a split piston boot where it sticks to the pad self adhesive backing.

Has your mate owned the car for long ?
Could it be that the previous owner only changed the pads on the passenger side at some stage ?

I remember being told that the passenger side pads tend to wear quicker because they pick up more dirt and grit from the edge of the road.

    thanks for the replys

he has had the car about a year, i just found it wierd that the drivers side was down to the metal and the passenger side looked hardly used.

i'll strip em and check em out then, stick in some new pads and keep a watch on it for it doing it again then.

anything i should know about changing the rear pads before doing them? i know they require the piston rewinding and have a kit for that anything else?

Check the piston boots and that the slider pins are free and well greased.

My rear did that, it was the guide pin. beaware that the guide pin bolts are single use, so get some before you start. If you buy genuine rear pads, you get the bolts with them

also if you putting on new disks the abs ring is interference fit, ie you need to heat them up and remove ]from the old one and fit to the new disk.

I bought new abs rings cost £30ish
