I'm thinking about bitting the bullit and getting VAG.COM., I hear it can do wonderful stuff like checking the state of all sensors, working the VNT actuator for the turbo, dyno runs, etc, etc.

I just wondered if it's functions are fairly self explanatory once you've got it. I see a lot of posts with people asking how to x and y and being told 'it's in channel xx' etc, just wondered how easy it really is to find your way around it.

Also as it appears you download the software from ross-tech, I wondered if this was a one time only thing, or if your licence would allow you to put the software on another machine. I ask this for legitamate reasons of course. In terms of your laptop going on the blink and needing replacing etc.

There also seems to be a number of versions avilable and different cables. I think I need the HEX-CAN.usb interface with the latest software (805?). The car is a 2004 (54), A4 B6. Does anyone know if this is definately the correct version I need?

Also is Ross-tech the only place to buy from, and are the prices set in stome there? Or are there cheaper alternatives?

Thanks in advance and apologies if these are basic (read - stupid) question.

The register code for the hex-can dongle is built in to the unit, it's a smart box. If you buy from ilexa.co.uk you will get the start up software. This will automatically update when you register with ross-tech. It is simple to use if you use it on autoscan. If you want to do specific things you may have to ask on here or check the ross-tech wiki. There are no cheaper equivalent alternatives. It will cost you about £260.00 plus a laptop. Hope this helps.
