    I have a 1.9 TDI 110SE Avant of 98 vintage

The Turbo has just given up, or so I think, the symptoms are a loud wooshing sound from turbo, black smoke from the exhaust but only if driven and it seems to go on off boost with no real power like its in a safe mode.

Havent removed the turbo yet but disconnected the air intake pipe to check the fins and for play in the spindle, seems to be ok from the intake side, this has also eliminated the intake being blocked.

Some advise on what to check and where to get another turbo/refurb breakers etc would be appreciated, I dont have the part nos of the turbo yet but its a garrett for engine code AFN (AHH) think its Part no:028145702HX?

Try disconnecting the Mass Air Flow meter and see if it runs any better. If so, there could be an air leak around the piping to/from the intercooler.

ha ha there was a large intercooler pipe hanging off!
only spotted it on further investigation once I removed the under tray, it must have gone into a safe mode hence the running on and off boost. I dont think its caused any turbo damage and it seems to be nice and quiet

    thanks for the advice chaps
