I have just bought a car and it has a really rubbish (imo) personalised reg.

Can anyone tell me how I can change it bk to the original plate?
The original reg is not being used by any car, I know this because when I wanted to hpi I tried quoting the original reg and they said it didnt exist. So Im assuming I could have that reg put bk on.

PS my current plate is for sale, the plate is J30 LLF if any one is interested, lol.

just apply to have the current plate put on retention, by default the original plate will be issued back to the car.

the process is faster if you go personally in to your local DVLA office, the don't accept credit cards, but will issue your replacement tax disc there and then, all you have to do then is take the corrected log book to halfords they zap the bar code when making your plates, but you won't have the log book, so you need an internet based company, fancy plates is one i have used, there is also a supporting company on this forum that could also assist you here.

In all the times (well, on 2 occasions ) I've put my plate on retention, they have never issued me with a replacement tax disc straightaway, and I have always gone to the DVLA office myself. Instead they sent it to me by post, with amended MoT certificate, received within a week (log book followed a few days later).

Agreed, taking it to the local VRO or DVLA Office is the fastest way, though if you don't want to take a day off/hang around, you can do it by post, they usually issue a temporary V5/Certificate of Entitlement, that you can use in the same way to get new plates made up. Usually it will default to the Original number, unless the car was registered new with the current plate, in which case they will issue a suitable age related number. Did the Hpi report highlight a plate change?

You will have to pay the cost of transfer and the retention fee (and RFL, if due), one of the presonalised reg transfer companys may be able to resell the current number for you, to offset these costs.
