its a common problem mate there are 2 drain holes in the battery compartment that get blocked with all kinds of rubbish you need to remove the battery to do a proper job give the holes a good clean i flushed mine with an hosepipe

Do a search on here, it is THE most common question on the A4/A6 and Passat. It is the subject of a recall at Audi and cleaning the drains is now on the service sheet but they never do it.

they say prevention is better than cure, the battery compartment should not fill up with water in the first place, these drain holes are only an aid,the problem lies with the seal which i have been told is a bit of foam which deterioates over time, a freind of mine had the same problem with his x plate a4,audi didnt find it but eventually he did, he used a good quality sealer along the existing foam and that cured the problem, hope this helps.

no mate the design allows water in the drain holes are there for that reason problems only start when these drain holes become blocked

Don’t listen to what mates tell you; listen to those that have been working on VAG products long before the designers of the A4 left kindergarten. The battery compartment is deigned to fill up with water, it is the plenum chamber and so is the air intake for the heating system. The foam seal at fault is around the base of the pollen filter housing and water ingress around this seal would not be an issue if the drains below the battery and servo were kept clear as is clearly stated on the Audi service sheets. Also not parking under trees/hedges/foliage would help if this was possible.

hi mate i think we are getting our wires crossed here i dont think audi sealed the battery compartment or whoever. i done a job on an a3 once that was letting water in even though the battery compartment was bone dry i removed the pollen filter tray completly from the car then put a thick bead of silicon sealant around the edge of the opening in the bulk head replaced the tray and bolted it down this solved the problem
