I am sure this is a FAQ somewhere... but:

I have put my crashed 1.9 TDi back together and now the 'box whines in every gear.

A replacement engine from a very slightly older Jetta, but same BXE code, has been mated to the existing 'box (cracked block on original engine).

I know the guy who bolted it up said the clutch assemblies looked a bit different - but he managed to get it working all the same?

Any ideas? Should I just change the oil? I guess he actually put some in it...

    Thanks for any pointers.

Why would there be different looking clutch assemblies on the same BXE code engines anyway?

If the impact was bad enough to crack the block, I'd suggest you've damaged the diff and or cracked the gearbox which has subsequently dropped all it's oil.
Get educated or get ripped off!

    Thanks for your thoughts.

A friend suggested that I simply check the oil level in the box, as he said it wasn't unknown for dopey mechanics to forget this last stage when fitting engine and box back together.

    Took a look.

Dry as a rattlesnake’s belly. Nada. Nicht. Not a drop.

    Could you believe it!

Refilling tonight. (didn't drive it today of course!) and will see if whine is rectified. Hope no lasting damage, as only done 16 or so miles since engine fitted.

Anyway thanks for your suggestion - and hope this is a lesson to anyone who trusts the local mechanic.
