    Hi Guys,
Looking to trade up (due to baby on the way) from my standard 02 Golf 2.0 GTi to a A4 2.0 TDi S Line Avant 05-Reg.
The question is should I go manual or auto, I'm taking a tiptronic for a test drive on sat but wanted to know your thoughts?
Will I notice a lack of power compared to the golf (its only 115hp)?
The dealer said he would go Auto but then as he only has an auto in stock he would wouldn't he.
    Thanks in advance.

Is that your Golf that is 115bhp.

    If so you'll be getting more power in the A4 2.0TDI: 140ps = 138bhp

Yes its the golf thats 115hp, so it will have more power but will the extra weight make a diferance?

Any pros and cons between Auto/manual?

    Golf power to weight = 115ps / 1246kg = 0.09ps/kg

    A4 Avant power to weight = 140ps / 1490kg = 0.09ps/kg

    Should feel the same.

I have a 2.0tdi SE Avant Multitronic, it can be very fast on take off, maybe that's why my first set of front tyres lasted 8k miles. I have now slowed up and get 20k+. The auto is very quiet and smooth and my car has averaged 38mpg over 38000 miles. I had a loan S line 170 manual for a couple of days and I preferred mine as there is no sudden blast of power, the consumption was similar but the clincher was the hard ride of S line with 17" wheels. Had to hang onto the wheel to stay in the seat on motorway undulations

Thanks Stagman, so the SE is a smother ride, the missus has a bad back so the S-line on 17" may be a bit too much for her.

Go with the manual every time. I have the 3.0 TDI engine in mine, and tested an auto and a manual version. I found that the manual won hands down, you feel more involved as a driver - and after all the A4 is a drivers car - so I would have an auto in, say, an A8.
If at first you don't succeed, re-define success

A mate of mine always says:

Auto's sap too much power (and are too heavy) to put in anything less than a 3.0
    I agree with this.

I also agree with 2007DBR9 - having manual gears is so much more fun than auto, especially when you have a big engine like the 3.0 or a punchy engine like the 2.0

A careful point to consider is this: In my limited experience of the 2.0 TDI, it tends to either be on-boost / off-boost and not much in between. If you like this, great but if you prefer more progressive power delivery, an Auto-box will help to smooth-out the power delivery to the wheels!

    Does that make sense?

    Hi guys,

so just had a lengthy test drive of

    2005 A4 Avant S-line - 2.0 TDI Auto tiptronic and 2005 A4 Avant S-line 2.0T FSI

Ive got to say the TDI was very punchy,i have to agree with stagman on that, loads of low range power, but the automatic just didnt feel right.....

Now the 2.0T FSI was the one, it didnt have half as mush low range touqe (spelling?) but as you have all said it was a drivers car, I felt fine chucking around corners, It is a fun car.
What did suprise me was it didnt feel that much quicker than the golf 2.0 GTI (115bhp)?? I dont know if this is due to it being bigger smother or what?

My mind is made up I'm going for the 2.0T FSI then going to get it remaped to give it an extra edge over the golf, who said family cars were boring!

So this is the one i was looking at (copied from dealers site)

Metallic Quartz Grey, Light Privacy Glass, contrasting Full Black leather sports interior, Audi Sat Nav Plus, air conditioning, climate control, Stereo, multi CD, electric windows/mirrors/twin lumber support, 6 speed, power steering, ABS Brakes, ESP, front and side airbags, 3 Three point rear seat belts, drivers info centre, luggage cover, roof rails, Full S Line Body Kit and styling, 18” Audi Sport alloys, front fogs, remote Audi alarm, Just 1 Lady Owner from new, This vehicle has covered only 64,000 miles and benefits from a Full Audi Service History from the supplying dealer,

all 4 alloys are curbed pretty bad, the rear headrests are missing! the leather isnt in great condition, the aluminium dash inserts on pass side are scuffed up very badly, the seat belt alarm keeps going off for no reason and the hatch thing in the boot (right hand side wing) un clips every time its driven. I havent checked the paint work or anything mechanical yet.

hes asking 12K I think its only worth 8K am i dreaming or is he being cheeky? was going to start with offer of £7500 its hard to know what he paid for it.

    What do the experts think?

    Cheers

Hes asking 12K hes had it for 8 weeks, what
