Ah that explains it! Are referring to the gas discharge lighting units? The bulbs I bought are just normal halogen bulbs, however it says HID on the box.. Guess i bought a cheap set of bulbs that try to create the same light as a gas discharge bulb! But they work great so I've no complaint!! Cheers!

Huh . . . what bulbs exactly did you purchase?

Oh, BTW, if you have retro-fitted genuine HID/Xenon capsules into a halogen headlamp, then you have made a highly illegal modification! Use the https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/search.php to find out more info.

SoulTaxi vbmenu_register("postmenu_25913", true); - If you have got standard H7 bulbs which say HID there a waste of time...

I spent at least £120 on bulbs trying to get the HID look... but its impossible,... to get the blue tint the bulbs need painting which reduces light...

    Is a no win sitution...

Have a look at my below threads on another forum where some so called "HID" bulbs set on fire and a few pic's of my HID'S

The best ones i ever found where Philips Blue Vision Plus.. i had tried all the main brands paying upto £45 a pair of Osram speical editions.

Have a read of the below and take it from there......

Yeah they're standard H7's, I must admit i thought they were poor when I first got them, but the beam pattern was different to my standard bulbs, I spent a bit of time adjusting them and I have to say they work great! Obviously the light isn't as intense as real HID's but it's still very bright and white. I've not needed to use my full beams as much on A roads because the light seems to spread better, even with both lamps aimed to the n/s.

    Is it though?

I've heard varying reports on this with quite a few people saying that their cars have passed an MOT with a H7 HID conversion, and this is on a Golf without projector lenses.

I know for sure that all new cars with HID's have to have a self levelling mechanism and headlight washers but I think the law is a bit grey when it comes to aftermarket items. I suppose if the HID's are not 'E' marked then they don't have any kind of type approval and would therefore be illegal?

Saying that I'll carry on running my HID conversion in my projector lensed Passat without self levelling or lamp washers as quite frankly the stock set up with normal bulbs is less useful than having candles.

    As the Clash once said...

I fought the law and the law didn't know where it was so didn't win.

I would be interested to know what the actual position is.

Now having the B5.5 Passat which has projectors as standard should be ok then ? I'm running the kit that was on the Golf in the Passat now, it's an H7 bulb swap.

    Ahh, they are OK.

You often find aftermarket halogen bulbs with added Xenon gas. They might be better than the standard OEM H7s, or the actual colour may be slightly different.
