    Car went into the dealer yesterday.

    They found an intermittent fault with the A/C pressure switch which they replaced. They also re-set the basic settings on the heater control motors.

    Had no further problems on the drive home last night and the drive into work this morning. I hope that the issue has now been resolved.

    If the fault returns, I will update.

    Thanks to everyone for your replies and guidance on possibilities for the problem.
