    Hello

Have a 2000 sharan tdi and been loosing water just below the cambelt, near the water pump. Is it normal for a pump to leak?, car drives ok and does not over heat, could it be just a leak in the pipes. I loose about 1/2 a litre a day just from dripping. Ive been told that i need a new pump fitted but it is rather costly so any advice is hugely appriciated.
    Thanks.

There should be NO leaks from the pump area. You'll need a new pump. It will only get worse and could fail altogether leading to possible head gasket or engine damage.

the water pump is split in two, you can change just the impeller side which is a lot less hassle then changing the whole pump, there is a core plug in the pump housing this tends to rust from the outside in, while the cam cover is off it might be a good idea to change the cambelt as well, kill 2 birds with 1 stone as they say

Costly! They are only £36 genuine, less pattern. How much were you told a new pump is?

Andy E, Thanks for the reply, had a cambelt changed about 10k ago but i've been told to replace again as after it's been re-stretched it may not be as strong. what do you think?

Crasher, Thanks for the reply, to supply and fit a new(recon) pump £250 but im not sure if that included a suggested cambelt change.

I dont really want to keep spending that sort of money on this car, it never seems to stop.

So far, air con compressor now it leaks and i gave up on that , screen wiper unit, central locking unit, very expensive clutch change, air flow meter, endless tyres, and only done 100k dread to think what it may cost next time. Head gasket ?

The coolant pump on an AVG is not cam belt driven, it is external. The official VW time is 220 time units so around 2 and a half hours.
