    Hello there,

    I am a new user, and have a 2000 W reg, VW Golf, mk4, 1.6 Petrol, Manual.

I have recently had some starting problems the last few weeks and was hoping somebody may be able to offer some advice.

I sometimes have to turn the key 3 or 4 times to get the engine running. Then whilst it has just turned over the revs are VERY low. As low as 2000 on the rev counter. It does this for about two minutes, and within that time, whilst pressing the accelerator nothing happens. As if the accelerator is not working.

But then the revs automatically increase to 10,000 and everything is working as it should again.

The car has just passed an MOT last week so i know it is not anything major.
I am thinking it may be air getting into the fuel pipe, but have also had a friend who had a similar problem but on a completely different (french) car which cost her a fortune to fix as it was an electronic sensor so i hope its not the same.

    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    Thankyou, Mike

I have now read the forum rules properly, and understand all of them fully. Thanks again.

Just because the car has had an MOT doesn’t mean it is anything simple but first of all you need to get a fault code read carried out. The problem will have left a fault code or two so get the result and post it. I think it will be a coolant temperature sensor problem and as you suspect, that is simple and cheap to deal with. By the way, if it was 10,000 rpm, the engine would explode, the idle speed is roughly 1,000 rpm and maximum possible revs are just under 7,000.

    Hi thanks for the reply.

Sorry about the rpm comment, i actually meant to say 200 rpm, when this happens. Barely ticking over for a minute.

Can i get a fault code read at most garages do you know? Or something i will have to take it in to Volkswagen for?

Sorry about the mistake, but im trying to learn

Don’t apologise, we all have to learn, I still am after 25 years of this trade, I would have got less for murder!

Most garages can do a fault code read but make sure you get P or VAG specific fault codes, preferably the latter. Some machines give out codes that are specific to the machine which can be awkward to transpose.
