The Volkswagen Golf range is extended this week in the UK, as the most powerful production Golf to date, the new R32, goes on sale on Friday 18 November. This coincides with a production milestone reached at Volkswagen in Wolfsburg, Germany, where the 24 millionth Golf rolled off the production line.

The anniversary model was a Golf Comfortline 2.0-litre TDI 140 PS in tornado red. Volkswagen Production Board member Reinhard Jung commented: ‘The Golf is top of the registrations list in Western Europe and the best-selling vehicle in the Volkswagen Group.’

The model’s success story began with production in 1974. By 2002 Golf production figures surpassed Beetle production, setting a new record at Volkswagen. In total, over 719,000 Golf models were delivered to customers worldwide last year, and the car is consistently ranked as the best selling vehicle in Western Europe.

The Mk V Golf range has been strengthened even further this year with the launch of the new Golf R32. The R32 has been eagerly awaited in the UK, its predecessor – the original Golf R32, based on the Mk IV Golf – outperformed all sales expectations, with over 2,300 sold in the UK alone, and the new generation is expected to follow this success.

The R32 has the highest standard specification of any model in the Golf range, and includes 18" alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights, as well as 2Zone Climatronic air conditioning, a ten-speaker audio system and rain sensor wipers with auto-dimming rear view mirror.

Powered by a 3.2-litre V6 250 PS petrol engine, the R32 features 4MOTION four-wheel drive as standard. Prices start from £23,745 for the 3 door version with a manual gearbox, rising to £25,575 for the 5 door DSG model. Full details can be found on the dedicated website: www.newgolfr32.co.uk.
