Hi all can anyone please advise me on how to open the rear drivers side door. I have looked at lots of threads on here but none seem to be quite the same. The car is a 98 1.8 sport saloon and the rear drivers door will not budge, the central locking appears to work as the knob goes up and down with the remote and the handles both offer some resistance. i have removed the door card and the inner metal one with some difficulty but still cannot get the door to open. any advice greatly appreciated.thanks si

If thumping and pushing of the door whilst operating the lock and pulling both inner and outer handles fails to work after about an hour, you have to access the back of the lock and attack it with a screwdriver until you can operate the catch. How have you obtained and MOT each year?

Ten years on from original post!! Lol
Only just happened! Door card etc all out lock multi-tooled to within an inch of its life and door now open! Shame I didn't have a replacement lock before I started! I wrongly thought that once I'd got into the door I'd be able to open the door relatively easily!! Oh how wrong was I.... 🙄

Just be thankful it is not a Golf 5... there is no access from inside as the door skin has to be removed and to do that you have to be able to open the door.....
