    Hey everyone,

I've been having a lot of problems with my new beetle. My parents purchased the car in 99' and then about 4 years ago it stopped working for two years. I needed a car to drive myself to high school so we fixed it up and it's been nothing but trouble ever since.

My car only runs well when the check engine light is on, and when it's off it drives terrible. I have a new issue though, that I would like to resolve before I head back up to college. Just recently my break light started to blink and every so often it makes an obnoxious beeping noise. My father and I think it's a malfunction because when my emergency break is up, the light doesn't come on.

Have any of you experienced this problem? How can I turn it off? The break fluid levels are perfect, and haven't gone down two weeks after I put break fluid in my car.

Also, I'm thinking my catalytic converter is all messed up. Everytime I start my car I get this rattling noise, which goes away after I accelerate. Oh well, sorry for such a long post.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    -Colleen

With so many problems is probably worth investing in VAG-COM, computer based diagnostic equipment for VAG cars. You could be up and running for $99 (fully registered version) plus £20 for a cable from Gendan/Eshrules Enterprises (if open) or similar.

Alternatively you could go to a local VAG specialist or good independent and get a fault code read done and report back. I would imagine it would cost £30 for a single scan.

How worn are the brake pads?

After being stood for so long, what are the discs like? They may need replacing because they could be deformed or very rusty.

On the catalytic converter thing, they are expensive to buy so again rather than guessing I would invest in VAG-COM.

    hello colleen

i seem to have the same problem

a check engine light and what seems like a rattling noise

also for some strange reason both my brake lights blew out- not sure if all this is connected?

I have brought a VAGCOM cable and loaded the shareware VAGCOM SOFTWARE but the engine controller dont seem to be responding despite the test signal being OK

have you managed to solve you problem yet- let me know and I'll also keep you posted?

    cheers
