    Hi All

Had my car looked at regarding a vag com fault code and was advised the
problem is connected to the rear cam chain ajuster out of limits. To correct
this the front end is to be removed cam belt and cams needed to be removed a new adjuster and h=then rebulid at a cost of around £675

Have changed cam position sensor due to starting problems and changed the speed sensor.
Can there be an adaption done to correct errors as I HAVE CHANGED BOTH SENSORS, or is be a top end rebuild as the garage states.

The car is running ok my problem is the engie fault light is on constantly, when I run vag-com and clear the fault at comes back when driving and stays on.

Fault code 17748 Camshaft position sensor (G40) / Engine speed sensor (G28): Incor. correlation.

Having looked at the wiki link, why would you ever need to have the timing chain lengthened

It means the timing chain may have already lengthened - I.E It has streched beyond its service limit.

I was just about to suggest that the sensor itself is unlikely to be faulty, but the timing belt/chain.

I had the exact same fault on my last car, when a garage failed to time it up properly, the cam position sensor picked this up and the rest is history....

I'd be wary of just replacing parts without having checked that chain first.

    hope this helps;
17748/P1340/004928 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40) / Engine Speed Sensor (G28): Incor. Correlation
    Possible Causes
    Timing Belt/Chain incorrectly installed
    Timing Chain probably lengthened
    Camshaft Position Sensor (G40) faulty
    Engine Speed Sensor (G28) faulty
    Possible Solutions
    Check Timing Belt/Chain installation
Use Measuring Value Blocks (MVB) to Check Timing Chain
    Check/Replace Camshaft Position Sensor (G40)
    Check/Replace Engine Speed Sensor (G28)
    Special Notes
When found in the 1.8T engine, check engine oil pressure. The oil pump pickup may be restricted.
When found in the 1.8T engine (possibly others too), check to make sure the correct G40 is installed (single gap versus 4 gap).

In that case most of the fault code possible causes are meaningless. The code is basically saying that the crank sensor and cam sensor don't agree with each other. As this engine is cambelt driven it means the cambelt has slipped or been fitted one tooth out. Another possibility is the cam has been removed and refitted 180 degree out. Has a new belt been fitted recently.
