Would appreciate if anyone could come up with any tips/pointers as to what I should be doing to investigate this issue further.

On my 2003 A6 1.9TDI PD (201,000miles), there is what appears to be an oil drip. A local garage vaguely reports it's oil leaking from a hose connection near the turbo....and not to bother doing anything about it, otherwise the car will start to run on oil...

Could this be signalling a serious prognosis for the turbo at some point in the future, or a build of crap in the related pipework?

    The car runs absolutely fine.

    Thanks in advance.

This is absolutely normal and nothing to worry about unless the car starts drinking oil. The oil is mostly drawn from the cam cover breather and some escapes from the turbo seal.

    Cheers old chap!

I suspected it was there previously, but only noticed it after the undertray went missing somewhere along the A5!

She's had a good innings hasn't she? Just goes to show if you treat 'em right.

She's doing great, and even running with a remap up to 191BHP. The only issue is some front suspension rattle, which I'll get sorted in the new year. I would like to get her to 300,000 miles (approx three years away).

Near the turbo, the most likely place would be oil dripping down from the EGR.

On the EGR look at the two vent holes either side on the top.

My Passat (with the same engine as yours) used to weep a fair bit out of here which to me would indicate that the diaphragm in the EGR is perforated.

The fix, if the oil is coming from there is a new EGR valve. However as a temporary measure, I simply pulled off and plugged the vacuum hose to the EGR (which keeps it shut).

That temporary fix is still doing its stuff almost 40k later will no ill effects.

    Just my thoughts.

Hi what’s your verdict on the remap? Has your economy suffered a lot?

    I've a 2003 1.9 130 PD and considering the same.

    Thanks

    Hi There,

I seem to have the same problem after fitting a new turbo.

I took off the vacuum pipe and blocked it which solved the oil leak from the holes but, the engine management light came on after about 3 miles... Mmmmmm

Is your management light on? I decided to reconnect the vacuum hose and put up with the leak - trouble is the oil drips on the manifold sometimes and stinks the cab out! not only that I'm losing up to half a litre a week (it does over 500 miles a week) and the longlife oil isn't cheap!

Any idea how much a new EGR is? or can anyone recommend a cheap supplier.

    Thanks in advance.

    Mark.

So it's a good thing the oil is leaking? I have the same issue, I took my engine under tray off to find it full of oil.. Upon further inspection I noticed leaking oil from my intercooler hose joints and also the breather pipe ( which was split btw) that goes from the top of the cam cover down to the turbo air intake hose, which also btw is showing signs of oil ingress at the lower end? The turbo itself was also coated in oil where the intake pipe connects to it? not to mention the ERG valve ******* out oil too? is this really to be expected?

If it's the EGR pipe you have blocked off I wouldn't worry about the MIL light, it will just throw up a code and fault - Exhaust Gas Recirculation System - Low flow detected.

I have mine blanked off to keep the exhaust gases gumming up the inlet manifold and to improve fuel economy, the MIL always lights up after a few miles of being reset, usually when just tickling it along.

No loss of performance or issues but the light is annoying.
