Shock Absorbers

Hi

I have a MK4 1.9tdi 115 HP which has been lowered. I have a knocking at the nearside rear and this may be either a shock or spring?? I am unsure
Without stripping the suspension and then finding what unit I have then having the problem of locating the correct parts. Is there any way of investigating to find out what time of system has been fitted so that I can buy the springs or shochs in advance once I determine what is causing the noise.

I would check rear ARB bushes first.

Thanks very much for the reply I will have a look at the manual and see how easy it is to do. I have a MOT in a couple of weeks and wonder if they will pick up the fault.
