    Hi Chaps,

This is my first post so apologies if this subject has been dealt with before.

I have an A6 1.9 TDI 2001 with a concert cassette radio + CD autochanger.

My problem is that when the radio is turned on it works fine for about 8 or 9 mins then starts to crackle, with the crackling becoming progressively louder.

The volume control, CD & cassette work fine.

I would be most grateful If anyone can let me know what to do.

Sounds like you've got a fault in the unit which is thermally related, this means that as the unit warms up over the 8 to 9 minutes a fault in the unit causes a component to overheat and this is probably thermal noise which is getting onto the power supply rails and ends up getting amplified along with your Audio Signal hence the crackling. You didnt say whether the crackling is from one side or on both speakers, if it is on only one side, then try swapping the speakers over to eliminate them from the investigation, if the crackling changes side when you do this then it is a speaker (distorted cone?)
If it is on both channels or still comes out on the same one side after you swap the speakers over then it is your unit at fault.
You could try OE Electronics of Calne Wilts (Type OE on Google to find them) they repaired my concert, made a good job too.

    Hi,

I've noticed that the speakers on the drivers side are not working too, but I will take the system out and see what I can find.

    Many thanks for the advice.

I will repost when it is fixed.

    Hi all,

Just an update on the problems I've had with my concert radio, in case anyone has had the same symptoms, and was wondering what was going on.

The main problem was that the radio started crackling after 8/9mins and the speakers did not work on the drivers side. Everything else was fine, cassette, CD changer, phone (through the stereo).

I had CARS (Car Audio Repair Service) in Birmingham have a look at and they found that the tuner, pre op amp and outut were faulty.

This meant (I think) that the faulty radio led to interference which was amplified through the speakers. The output to the right hand speakers were also not allowing the signal to reach the speakers.

The solution? well the repair would have cost £150 or £85 exchange.

I decided to get another unit via ebay (with vol repair done). When installed everthing worked perfectly! And no cracking at all -bliss.

Although this unit was a concert plus so no vol issues.

I think that is roughly it?? But if anyone can explain this more elequently it would be most appreciated.
