    Hi Paul,

Yeah that sounds similar, as this morning we got a bit of pulsing as my wife was driving into work.
I'm fairly certain, after reading a few forums, that it is due to the previous owner driving it gently through town therefore clogging up the vanes. I'm quite sure a strip and re-build would cure the problem but as I have only had the car for 7 months and the Audi warranty is stumping up I'm quite happy for them to change it.
Not sure why they are changing the EGR cooler also, and that will make it quite difficult to say if the turbo change has made a difference or if it was indeed the EGR system, but again, I'm not going to complain

Will post an update once I have had it changed over, may be sooner as it's now doing this pulsing, I will be giving them a phone today.

    Cheers

Ahh thanks Paul, seems like we have exactly the same problem. Who knows, if we get some luck, the likes of Crasher or A8 Tech might explain the oil cooler change?

And, crikey, when the turbo is pulsing they're awful to drive aren't they?

    Hope all goes to plan.

    Hey Paul,

Having looked at the procedure for changing the EGR cooler and Turbo it doesn't look overly complicated, just time consuming and requiring a great deal of cleanliness!! I found the slip from when I put my car in a few weeks ago to see why it was losing coolant and they suspected the EGR cooler then too! Maybe they are just desperate to change it, who knows

Will let you know the outcome when I get it changed.

Paul you are indeed right about it being time consuming rather than tough. Just, in the past fortnight, I've replaced the turbo on my son's Octavia. The only problem was it was so hard to get to, but on my van I can see its going to be so much tougher...

I've found a genuine brand new turbo for £500 ish on the net. That might be the way to go.

If Eshrules can find a cure for the driver problems with my VAG-COM USB cable then I'll be able to see if it is overboosting. That's what I expect.

I still have the turbo from the Octavia, so I'm going to have a good look at that, and see if it's possible I could reconidition my van's turbo at an affordable price. Then again, at 106k... it might just be worth the investment of a new one.

    Hi Paul,

Well, I got the car back yesterday evening after the turbo and EGR cooler were replaced (And very shiny and clean they look too )
The car is a lot smoother to drive, power seems to be coming in smoother rather than as sharp as it used to be, which I guess would be explained by it overboosting. Kinda wish I had done a logged run with VCDS to see if it was spiking or just a constant overboost up to around the limit and just popping over it. Ho hum!!

I would be tempted to have a go at re-conditioining it, all depends if it is just the vanes which are clogged. If there is any play in it then I would just replace it to be sure that you don't have to go through the rigmarole of taking it off again some time soon!!

I'm sure Eshrules will have you sorted in no time

Ahh, thanks for that Paul. Looks like either reconditioning or replacing the turbo is the way to go. I'll try just the turbo first... if I can get out of doing the EGR cooler I will.

I'm going to have a good look at the turbo removed from the Octy, so I've got an idea as to how it works. The vanes in the Octy did have play in them so I hope its not the same in the van.

Glad yours is sorted! Let me know if she stays well!

Right, rigged my VAG-COM up to the van and got exactly the same overboost code as you got, Paul.

A new turbo from VW was in excess of £1,000.

But I have a brand new, genuine one on the way from Germany for £530ish.

Time to get me hands dirty when it eventually arrives... Royal Mail at the moment is a joke!

    Hi Paul,

I know, what a joke from the dealers. Although, I suppose they have to cover their costs and if we didn't like it we should have bought a cheaper car...

Good luck with the install, looks fairly straight forward so you should be ok. And at least you get the old turbo to play with afterwards

Let us know how you get on

    Hi Paul

Fitted the turbo this evening... and oh dear!

The fault remains! Its constant lack of power now, and switching the ignition does nothing to help it.

However, the overboost code has gone. For now at least anyway.

So £550 later I'm no wiser.

I really can't see the problem being the EGR cooler, as you said your car was losing a bit of coolant? My van's coolant is spot on, not losing a drop.

Is yours still running A1, Paul?

    Regards,

    Hi Paul,

Yeah, mines is still running hunky dorey!! Not checked for any codes lately, but still pulling well.
Have you checked that you've not damaged any vacuum hoses when re-installing the turbo? No boost sounds like it could be something really silly!!
I can't see the EGR cooler affecting it, my coolant loss was down to a faulty water pump not the EGR cooler at the end of that day. Still not sure why they replaced that!!
I would definatly step back and then check every single wire, hose connector around the turbo side and see if you can see anything that looks untoward.

Are you getting any codes at all??

Can you hear the turbo spooling up? I keep thinking this has to be a piping issue as the turbo should spool if the wastegate isn't open, and if the wastegate is open then you've got some sort of vacuum issue. I think!!

Let me know how you get on buddy!!
