How long would you expect a battery to survive in a diesel engine car ?

I'm presuming the life of the battery would be shorter than in a battery in a petrol engine.

The battery in my A6 is close to 5 years old and seems to have got very weak lately, i had been blaming a dodgy interior light but that doesnt seem to be the case.
It starts fine on normal mornings but on the couple of colder mornings that we have had (only down to 3 degrees or so) the battery shows under 12 v on the dash gauge and is only just about able to turn over the engine

Although some batterys may last 7-8 years,5 years is the average age for a battery.

I think Audi recommend a replacement after 6 years so you might aswell bite the bullet and get one rather than suffering a non starter when you need it the least.

Yeah, I agree, and it may be obvious to some but the battery draws more current during the winter months. I got landed with that problem almost two years ago now! (How time flies!) Turned out to be the battery. Definitely get it done. Isn't as expensive as you thinkg and it's just a simple case of swapping them around. Easy job for anyone, even with no previous car experience.
