I am thinking to put a ABF bottom end, what problems can this cause then? The engine block is taller will this effect closing the bonnet. The garage did mention that the block will be taller, but closing the bonnet should be ok.

The block is 16-mm taller so this causes problems with the front pipe angle and the bonnet can hit the throttle linkage. I will not use the ABF (except in throttle body applications like on my own Golf 2 which is a 2.2 in an ABF block) only the 9A.

Thanks Crasher, i have spoke to the garage and have decided to spend the extra money and get the 9a block as you recommended (rebuilt). I am also getting a gas flowed head but this is a 16v abf one.
With these changes, what else needs to be done? Also what sort or BHP figures are we looking at? Will the KR cams be ok?

Will the driveability be better, and will this affect the reliability. Any known issues after this engine change? Is it something you recommend.

    Thanks

I'd have thought you'd be looking at around 170/180bhp with the gas flowed head and cams but I'm sure Crasher will give a more accurate figure.

A tubular exhaust manifold should help with the mid range torque aswell.

Thanks for that info, I will wait for Crashers input and see what he comes up with.

Any ideas of any insurance companies that will insure this car that has the bottom block changed to a 2 litre. I phoned up mine to tell them of the change and they said they will not insure it has the engine is not a standard 1.8. Cheers

Try Chris Knott they've given me a very cheap quote on mine with all the Mods declared. If they're no good pm me and I'll get you the number for Brentacre, another modded VW specialists that are well cheap.

A rebuilt 9A is a mugs game, don’t do it. Find a worn out 9A and hand it back to VW for an exchange unit, they cost £1050, a set of 9A pistons costs £500 and if they use KS pistons it will never stop burning oil. I would suggest you stick with a KR head.

The KR ECU is fine but the fuelling will need increasing by roughly 20%

Can that be done with an adjustable or rising rate fpr?

    Or is it mapping accordingly?
