I would like to ask if the oil filter in the CVT gearbox can be changed or not? Some garages say it can whilst others say cannot as its located inside the gearbox. I pulled up a few diagrams for my "GHW" gearbox and it seems to be an inline filter (circled in red if part is correct). Can anyone confirm if the filter can be changed or not as expoded view doesnt show any filter part.

Furthermore, found that the CVT actually has an oil cooler! Does this apply for all models of the A4 that use the CVT gearbox? Can one see the oil cooler if I was to jack up the car as I dont see it front mounted by the radiator?

    Thanks!

    Jim

Crasher was originally talking me through getting my multi sorted and he was quite clear that I should insist if they were chaning the fluid that they change the fluid and the filter. I trust his opinion and his knowledge is based on working on these things, so I guess it can be changed........I guess it's just an utter **** of a job!!

    Cheers,
    Dan.

Dan how much did Audi charge you or was it FOC?

I believe the filter is at the back of the gearbox and you must remove the whole CVT assembly before one can replace it.

    Cheers

Mine was FOC as part of their investigations but I cannot imagine it being cheap given the auto-fluid is £100 from them.....

    Hello a4_jim,

Yes you can change the ATF oil filter BUT audi state that this is not mandatory. Though the ATF oil MUST be changed evey 40,000 miles the filter is for life unless damage has occured within the gearbox.

Replying to the oil cooler question, yes all A4 CVT gearboxes have an oil cooler. The oil cooler is part of the coolant rad. If you look down the o/s/f you can see the delivery and return pipes attached to the rad.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Sean

    Thanks for the reply.

Found that the filter cost only 15 quid from vagparts but bit silly its not changed when oil is renewed. I found out that the filter is within the gearbox and one must open up the cvt pulley area in gearbox to install, true? I know the gearbox ECU replacement is quite straight forward to install but is the filter really that hard to replace?

I bet Audi thought the gearbox ECU would be for life...how wrong they were!

    Thanks
