My 1999 A6 Avant 2.4 V6 is slow at starting. It takes about 3 seconds to turn it over, but sounds like it is struggling. You can smell the unburnt fuel too.

    Any ideas at all please??

You think? I was thinking this, but it had a new one around 2 yrs ago. It drives just fine. The battery dial (voltmeter is it?) shows it at around 14v.

Volt meter shows the charging rate, so your alternator is good.
I would get the battery checked for dead cells.

could be a faulty temp sensor. Had to change mine as it was reading 12 degrees to low, so kept flooding the engine.

Does your engine reach 90 degrees after 4-5 miles? if not the sensor could be the issue.

Just to confirm on the battery angle.

Voltage with ignition on, and engine off, (not having been run for several hours)
    should be about 13 volts.

when cranking it should not drop below 10.5 volts. (you need a meter on the battery)

if it drops to 8v then you have a weak cell in the battery.

modern batterys last 2 - 5 years dependant on quality, and use.

Thanks.... It is not the temp sensor, so it must be the battery. Will check it today
