I have a 2002 S6 and everything was working fine, parked in my driveway, and when I started the car, I couldn't engage it into a gear. I noticed that the little brake light beside the park gear was not on and the shifter was "locked". But if I turned off the car and just moved the key to the first stage..before the dash light up that I can shift

Has anyone had this problem or know what it is?

I'm not into Auto's but if you had to have your foot on the foot brake to get out of park before the fault then I would suspect the brake pedal switch has failed. Regards Pete

Thanks Peter D for your impute. My research has also been leaning to the brake switch failure. Too bad here is the US most service guys that know to work on Audi are closed.

Hi Peter, I checked my brake lights and they are working. My email is zgruich@neo.rr.com.

Can you tell me where the brake locking sensor is located? Any diagrams would be helpful. I will have a tech guy check the fuses later today, but I need to locate the fuse box first. This engine bay is packed and I do not see.

    Thanks,

some of the brake petal switchs have two contacts, one for the lights , the other for the selector locking solinoids. If when you are pressing the brake pedal down you don't here a click, it is either switch, solinod or lack of power, i.e. loose wire or fuse.
