hi people, started my car up this morning (n reg mk3 1.9 GL) put the windows down (front driver and passenger) and they will not go back up. there is no noise when i press the buttons, but they will go further down. i thought it may be the key fob as it would not unlock or lock using the buttons, but i have bought a new battery and there is no difference. any ideas on what it could be? any help at all appreciated. i also am a 1st time owner and only had it for 2 months after passing my test (its my 1st car please help).

There could be one serius problem with your golf windows!

The window is lifted and raised by the means of a cable that wraps around a drum.
This drum is inturned driven by the motor for the electric windows.

The problem could be that the cable has frayed and some of the strands have broken causing the window to not come up again.

You may need to take the door card off and remove the window and inpsect the window mech to see if the cable is frayed.

If the cable is frayed you will need a new window lift mech.
A new window mech is around 70 quid, but good examples can be found on ebay used for around 15quid.

I had this very same problem on my P-reg golf GL tdi.
Now dont use the passenger window but have replaced the drivers with a new mech.
The good news is that the motor will be ok.

Sorry for the bad news but I hope that this helps you.

Its not that hard to change the mech, but wou will have to be careful not to break your glass.

Another window problem that i had was the wiring loom in the door getting trapped. This broke one the ground wires for the motor which caused them not to work. Took me ages to figure out the problem after replacing switches motors etc.

If this were so, would the window be able to be wound down ?

But well worth a look to ensure that there are no imtermittant joints.

    Old cars are great.
