Have you cut the stereo cables or the cables in the car.
What stereo are you trying to fit?

i cut the cables for the stereo, its an alpine.
i went to a garage yesterday and they put it in for me but after having use it today i have noticed that

    1. it doesn't automatically go on when i turn the ignition switch
    2. i set up the radio so that it will be set for the radio stations i like, but every time i leave the car and come back after removing the key and lockin the car it forgets the stations i set

    any ideas guys??

You need to swap the red and yellow wires.
Different makes of stereo use these differently.
One is permanently live to allow the stereo to keep the settings stored etc.
The other is switched to let the stereo to turn on and off with the ignition.
Sound very much like they have swapped these two around.

There are two feeds to your unit, one is a switched +12V feed (which is normally red) and the other is a +12v MEMORY which is normally yellow.
The switched feed should go to the ignition key whilst the +12V MEMORY wire should normally go to a permanent +12 feed which is there even if the ignition is off. That will ensure your stations are stiil there and it shoud go off when you pull your ignition key out of the lock barrel.
    Hope this helps
