    Hi,

    I'm buying a used (04, 60k) 2.0 gt tdi mk5 and have asked the garage (not vw) to sort the cambelt as not been done.

    I'm happy for them to do this work as it is not costing me. I wanted to push for a water pump but did not ask (i seem to recall reading about it on here).

    My question is can i get the water pump done a few months later or does it HAVE to be done at the same time as the cambelt??? If so how much to expect to pay? I'd rather get it done at a later date you see.

    Same time. Waterpump runs off the cambelt.

    I imagine a new waterpump (make sure it's a brass impellor) will be about £40.
    Get educated or get ripped off!

    to do the water pump,the cambelt has to be done.
    so if the garage are doing the belt,tell them you will pay for the pump and they can fit it while they are on.
    i believe they are under £50.
    if you wait you will be looking at around £300-£400 if done correctly.

    Hi, do these have to be done together because of the order they are in?

    I recently had a new water pump on my 3series and of course with a cam-chain it was quite easy. Although i wasn't best please when the water pump bearing went in the first place!

    to clarify, these dont have to be done together, but since the timing belt has to be removed to change the water pump, and most of the cost of the job is labour, it would be a bit daft not to do both together instead of doing the full job twice.

    It's ok. I've confirmed it by seeing it with my own eyes so happy it's all being done.

    Unsure if VW parts though.

    i'm doing my cambelt soon, i'm not changing the waterpump, unless of course its leaking when i get the belt off the the bearing feels a bit dodgy, my dads passat has got 120k on it, had 2 cambelts but has never had a water pump so unless you want to do it you dont really have to.

    I'd tend to agree, unless it's suspect or really think you want to. If it goes its labour i know. VW just did my cambelt and there was no question to ask if the water pump should be done.

    Hi,

    If you are doing the cam belt the water pump is a MUST in my eyes..

    The water pump impellers tend to fail around 100-120k on average on most vag's due to the plastic impellers..

    GO TO PAGE 5 for photos of the work which had to be carried out to change the water pump.... plusa new cambelt while it was in bits..

    Also theres photos of the broke water pump...

    If anyone wants to risk it by not changing it for the sack or around £40.00 thats up to you..

    I know what i will be changing..
