Our Oil warning light has just come on to say we are low on oil. Can anyone please tell us which oil we should use and where to get it from. The car is a Vw Golf 1.9 TDI '55'

Incidently it is in need of a service therefore we are just looking to top it up and to use it for another week or so before its service.

Also how long can we run the car for now the warning light has come on?

    Thanks in advance

If your oil light is on I would get oil in it as quick as possible.

If you are just going to top it up for a week till you service the oil is not critical some is better then not enough.

Any oil conforming to VW505.01 or better should be ok. Something like Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 5W-40.
Nothing to see here, move along..

wow how big are you that your location is Cumbria and Yorkshire does Lancashire sit under your butt crack so doesn't count as your location since it's not touching.

Thanks for your quick replies, I have been told to use semi synthetic is this right,I don't know anything about oil and I am just going to pop nto Halfords and get some. Will this semi synthetic do or do I have to get castrol?

    Don't use semi-synthetic
It has to be full synthetic for all PD engines. Halfords do their own 5W-40 full synthetic however, that's OK to use.

As stated by Hex it really needs to conform to VW505.01.
If you really are only going to run it for 1 week before a service and you struggle to get anything with that standard and good Diesel oil will do to get you bye

I'm lucky to live in Cumbria, but have a flat in Yorkshire to use during the week at work. Jobs in Software Testing are hard to come by in Cumbria, so you have to go where the work is.

As for Lancashire being up my butt crack, do you know how difficult it is to extract all the pies and black pudding

If it's for the week until a service, the halfords oils will probably be ok.

Seriously though, German cars are quite reliable only if you maintain them properly.

You should be aiming to check the oil, coolant, brake and power steering levels as well as tyre pressures/condition every week.

As the old saying goes: An ounce of prevention is a pound of cure.

I've saved myself untold hundreds in repair bills by rectifying problems before they become an issue.
