Is it definatly a cambelt or is there a chance it could be chain driven? If this helps in my hand book for my Golf MK3 it sayd the cambelt must be changed every 60,000 miles I think. If the cars got high miles on and you don't know if it's been changed, it may be worth getting done if only for piece of mind.

as already mentioned, if your unsure about the cars history, replace it anyway, just to be safe. also, i would consider changing the tensioner dependant on the mileage as it is not usually the belt that fails, but the tensioner itself.

VW now reccomend 60k or 4 years, whichever comes first. i should imagine most mk4s will now be due or exceeding this scale by now. you should expect to pay no more than £350 top whack for the belt and tensioner change. i would also consider the water pump being replaced if the mileage is approaching 100k.
