Check the price at the dealer. IIRC the replacement for my 1.8 SE was quite reasonable.
As it's a B5 the knob should screw off and the frame just snaps off the centre console.

Hi, I have a 2002 model (Don't know how different it will be). Picked up a new Gator from Ebay for about a fiver, removed the old one from the base starting on the back edge if I remember correctly, then had to remove a securing ring to release the gear knob followed by the gator. Putting the new one on was pretty simple, used a hose clip to replace the securing ring (can't buy these seperately from VW apparently) and clipped the bottom of the gator back in. THe new leather one is far better quality to the worn synthetic one that came with the car.

    Hope this helps.

Do a search on ebay, the gator my Passat was really tatty but I got an excellent replacement, real leather and exact fit, for a few pounds from, even came with instructions on how to fit. Makes the inside look much nicer.
