Thread: temp gauge not working ?

  1. temp gauge not working ?

    just drove home tonight 20mins in the car needle didnt move ?

    loose connection ? where to look and what to wiggle please ? no warning

    lights on etc , just noticed that needle didnt seem to move during the

    journey? help !!

    very common well documented temp sender failiure, apparently audi doing a recall free replacement on part dependant on model, year , mileage etc

    yeah let me kno how that goes down. as my gauge stopped working last year. changed the sensor. and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt.

    bein an 02 with low mileage as yours you may be in luck, but who knows i think they make thing up as they go along i found a site which was american(oh dear!!) but showed a document off audi saying they are aware of the problem and will extend warranty claims across america and europe. hope they help you out

    well after trawling through the forum on here ...seems i need a new temp sensor ....as my problems sounds like it a commen problem !!

    off to ring audi and find out the cost

    ok update !! been out in the car for an half hour drive .....gauge working

    sat at 90 degrees all the way ..was driving car quite hard to get temp up !!

    only think noted was ...rad fan didnt cut in ...was expecting it too as when i

    got back and went under bonnet was really hot in there ....coolant bottle

    seemed red hot !!

    also on journey my instant trip / fuel consumption computer was all over the place !!

    showing 200 mpg then going down to 50 . 40 , then not reading at all

    then back to 200 again ...all the other settings work ok ....

    im really puzzled now !! dont seem to be loosing coolant either

    help !! gav.

    Hi Gav,

    If you are having problems with the display and the temp gauge then that would lead me to think either the instrument cluster has a fault or there is a faulty earth connection that both parts use.
    Easiest thing to do is check behind the cluster that the earth lugs are screwed in well and therte are no loose/damamged wires going to the instrument cluster.

    Hi I have a similar problem My car is Vw passat from 2002 2.0 Alt engine code .I just bought it , at the beginning sometimes was showing the temp sometimes not, and nowadays not at all, Where should I look for problems ? The gauge is faulty or the sensor or sensors ?? I found one close to the cooler but replacing it will drain the coolant I Guess .I rather be sure before start. Thank You

    The car starts well and reading Obd temp is ok ?So where the problem could be ?
