I have a W reg Golf 2.0 GTI that for the last few months has been experiencing intermittent problems with jerky acceleration. It only happens when the engine is warm and only at fairly low revs. The problem never occurs at higher speeds e.g. on the motorway. Also, and this might just be my imagination it seems to occur more often when the climate control is switched on.

I had it in at a garage today for some other work and got them to run some diagnostics. It came back with 4 fault codes:

17990 - Idle Adaptation Limit Reached
P1582 - 35 - 00 - -
16523 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor B1 S2 : Response too slow
P0139 - 35 - 10 - - - Intermittent
16515 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor B2 S2 : Signal too low
P0131 - 35 - 10 - - - Intermittent
16486 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70): Signal too low
P0102 - 35 - 10 - - - Intermittent

The guy at the garage has suggested that they reset the fault codes and then I drive it for a bit. If the problem re-occurs I should take it back and they will rescan it as the problem might not necessarily be all three sensors. He also said that there is a possibility that after they reset the codes the engine might not run at all until the faults are fixed.

I thought I would post to get some opinions. Firstly, does this sound like good advice? Secondly, what would you expect to pay at an independent VW specialist for replacing the MAF/oxygen sensors? Also, I've seen some walkthroughs of cleaning your MAF sensor, is this something an amateur should consider taking on? I'm loath to pay out a load more money since I've just paid out to get the suspension and the brakes done.

As I said the problem is intermittent and doesn't seem to be deteriorating at all so I'm kind of inclined to just leave it for a bit.

Any opinions/advice most welcome.
