Warning to all 1.9 tdi pd engine owners.
Today we completed a full fuel system replacement.
This came to £2000 and the reason why we had to replace every part of the fuel system was biodiesel.
The fuel system was clogged the fuel filter element had turned to soggy cardboard like material. If bio diesel smells sweet then that was the fuel in the system.Be warned the pd engine doesent like it one bit.
I have never smelt or delt with bio diesel so i could be wrong but it wasnt diesel thats for sure and the owner didnt wish to discuss the stange fluid.
Please correct me if your using bio diesel without any issues.

    thanks for that bonnie lad.
like thousands of other pd owners, i was wondering how they would react to alternative fuels, although to be honest the economy on them is great, and now the price of veg oil is as high as diesel,it's not worth taking the risk.
but now i know for sure(thanks).
i will stay clear of "cheaper alternatives".
    many thanks for the info,

    paul,
i repair the forklift trucks used by" bio fuels" teeside.(along with others)
not a large site compared to others, but the last time i was there(about three weeks ago), the plant was at a standstill.
where they had previously used vegetable oil, they had recently started
buying in used oil from restaurants, chip shops etc. but even that was proving too expensive to produce in order to sell at a profit!!!.
having said that,it would seem that the pd would not like biofuel, and so
you would have to move back to an injection pump diesel which would no doubt fall into the new "green" excise tax brackets commanding huge excise duty.
    they have us every way.
    take care,
    stewy.

So even this veggie oil isn't working for the producers of it ! That's dreadful !

Unless you specifically know what form of alternative fuel it was... can't really speculate.

    1. There's SVO - Straight Vegetable Oil - which is the oil you can buy from supermarket.
    2. There's WVO - Waste Veg Oil - which is the used stuff after frying chips etc. This needs to be cleansed/dried through various processes to remove contaminents and glycerine.

    3. And then there's the Bio-Diesel found at soem service stations. This is RME and made from rapeseed. There is a EU standard spec this can be produced to.

Any of the above could have been poured undiluted into the tank or mixed with regular derv. It is widely known that bio-diesel removes sediment etc from fuel tank/lines and dumps them in the fuel filter. This is why the Fuel Filter needs to be changed initially after first few hundred miles of first making the switch to Bio- Diesel.

There's a user on this forum (think it's Huweth) who uses Bio-diesel in his passat tdi PD. He says he has used it for several thousand miles with no problems so far (last time I saw one of his posts).

I think VAG were one of the very few manufacturers that said it was ok to use Bio-Diesel (RME) in tehir cars upto 2004. Think it had a max blend of about 50% though. Can't find the source for this but check it for yourselves.

I actaully saw something posted online that Audi had approved it for cars upto 2002 I think.

I'm desparately trying to search for that link now

EDIT: This isn't the one I originally saw last year but have a look at the first paragraph, section 4.7, page 68
