    Nearing the end of my suspension arm change, just need to torque everything up. In the workshop manual it states "stage 1" and "stage 2" torque settings. Not quite sure what this means.

    Quite simply;

    Stage one, tighten everything to x/nm of torque.

    Stage two, tighten everything to x/nm of torque OR a further x degrees.

    I don't know what the spec's are on what you need to tighten but I'd assume the stage one would be a figure in nm (newton metres of foot pounds) you would use a torque wrench on and stage two would be an angle by which you would have to further tighten everything.

    Also note that on suspension components you normally need to do the final tightening with the component loaded i.e. the weight of the car on the ground on its wheels.

    Thanks for that. I thought stage 1 was off the ground and stage 2 was on.I'm changing my suspension arms and just got to torque things up.Your right, it says for one stage 1 50NM, and stage 2 90 degrees.I think I will loosen everything up before I lower it down, then torque it all up. Might have to do it on some ramps though, if i cant get to some of them. Thanks for your help.

    I don't know, but would imagine Stage 2 should be done with the weight of the vehicle on the suspension. In that case, ramps are going to make it a lot easier....

    The front of the car is supported on axlestands, of course?!
    Make sure the suspension bolts are loose, then place a jack under the bottom balljoint. raise the hub until the car nearly starts to lift off the nearest stand, then let it down a touch. You can now torque the bolts a bit easier than with the car resting on the ground, if you don`t have ramps.
    Nik.
