hi hope someone can give me some advice.if i leave the car for a day when i turn on the ignition it will be showing just under 12 volt, once started it will be just above 14 volts,if i stop the engine and turn the ignition on maybe 1 hour later it will show above 12 volt, but if left for 1 day it will be just below 12 volts.is this a sign the battery is on its way out or just me worrying about nothing, cheers,

Unless you have a drainage problem the battery may be getting old. How old is it ?? Regards Peter

And what year is the car and what mileage. Go for a decent run and drive straigt to a ca raccessory shop and ask them to test the batter. They tend to use a pulse discharge system which identifies the internal resistance and the Amp/H capacity and will indicate if the battery is folding. Regards Peter

That would be the original battery, probably on it's way out. Go and get it tested they do not charge you and takes 10 seconds. Regards Peter

I just had to change the battery on my '99 A6. My symptoms were just the same as yours, but it came on overnight. Car wouldn't start one morning (reading 8V), jumped it, drove to work. When I left the car the charge (non-running) was about 12.5 V, went back at lunchtime to check, and it was reading 8.5 V. Still started though.

Went straight to Costco and bought a new one. Had to change it then and there as well, because although the car was reading 12V + when I went into the shop, it only read 8V when I came out.

Be ready for a £80 quid bill.

See elsawin instructions below. If you disconnect the battery, Charge it, wait 2 hours, and take a voltage reading. If less that 12.5v then battery is suspect.
    Regards

    Description of work
    Battery: Check "no load" voltage
    Test units required

    ◆ Digital multimeter V.A.G 1715
    or

    ◆ Hand-held multimeter V.A.G 1526 B
    Notes:

◆ The vehicle must not be driven or started with the battery that is to be tested for at least 2 hours before performing measurement.
◆ The battery must not be loaded by connected power consumers for at least 2 hours before performing measurement.
◆ The battery must not be charged for at least 2 hours before performing measurement.
‒ Check voltage between battery terminals with the ignition switched off.
If the measuring instrument indicates 12.5 V or more, then the battery is OK.
If the voltage is less than 12.5 V, locate the source of the problem (repair measure).

    Waggy:
You need to get a load test (sometimes referred to as a volt drop test) carried out on your battery as terminal voltage is not a reliable method by which the condition of a battery can be determined.
The real test is to place the battery under load and then see how the voltage behaves.
Any decent electrical car place should be able to do this for you,
They disconnect the battery and subject it to a controlled test by which a large current is drawn from the battery and the terminal voltage is monitored under these load conditions.
If a cell is faulty or there are any problems the terminal voltage will drop off very quickly, a healthy battery will be able to maintain it's terminal voltage even with a high current being drawn from it.
    Hope this helps
