Hi there - am going mad trying to repair electric mirrors on mk4 golf. Both mirrors just stopped working one day - nothing - and then the switch fell apart. have replaced the switch but still nothing on either side. Does not appear to be any current running to the switch - does not light up with instruments etc - no apparent voltage of any sort to any of the 4 wires feeding the plug. Does the switch run off one of the relays under the dash? fuses 1 & 5 seem fine as are the rest of the fuses. The wires running between the door and body are all in good order no obvious brakes etc. This is driving me mad - has anyone ever had a similar problem? the mirrors are the non heated version.

No, not quite the same, but recently the (heated) electric mirros on my 2000 GTi started behaving wierdly - if you select the left mirror then the joystick moves both mirrors together (in, out, rotate up, rotate down).

If you select the right mirror then only this mirror is controlled.

Strange, although in fact quite useful!

Btw, I think the heating function doesn't work anymore, but must wait for winter to test ...

Standard feature on VAG cars from around 2000. does this on my passat also.

I believe this is the normal way that the mirrors operate

The remote mirrors operate from the window can module. Will need some equipment to clear any fault codes from the control module and then test further.
    I hope this will help

Yes, it's standard, although mine were the other way round, as in on the three Mk4 Golf's I've had, moving the right one (off side) moves the near side one too. Selecting the near side one only moves the mirror on that side.
