I must admit when I travel through France, which is very often, it does come in handy as I never could read the small km on the analogue dial.

So on the one hand I complain, on the other it does have its advantages!!
Jim - not sure if we're talking at cross-purposes here. According to the 'English' driver's manual, section 3.1, p. 11 'Mileage display' you can choose either to have a constant display of total miles whilst on the move or speed in kph on the move. However, it does add the rider that it's law in some countries to have both displayed. My French handbook says the same.

However, the first two paragraphs, 'Odometer' and 'Trip recorder', throw me completely, since you cannot zero the 'total' trip meter - the trip meters are in the MFD

With the rapidly increasing number of both fixed and mobile speed cameras here, in addition to my normal analogue speedo in kph, I would prefer the digital readout to be in kph rather than mph since I find it easier to glance at. Cruise control is a blessing though - it's too easy to go too fast on empty roads.

Just in case someone is interested all digits on the odometer were the same three times during the car's life - 000000 - 111111 - 222222.

Because I bought the car with 39,000 on the clock I only witnessed the second two combinations.

Won't see that on the Passat though
