    Hi all.

Still hunting for a decent 2nd hand Passat. Been mostly searching through Auto Trader. I'd *like* a V6 4Motion and they are coming up at about £3500 with 100k on the clock (and this is petrol not diesel) but I know that it's going to be juicy, pricey and tax and insurance will be a constant pain!!!

I've taken a shine to TDI 130 Sport (with 6 speed box) and these seem to be coming up for about £3000-£4000 but with mileages in excess of 130k.

My question is, what IS a high mileage VW Passat? At what point do I need to be careful? I'm assuming that any car I'm looking to view will have a FULL VWSH but when does the mileage start to be an issue on Petrol and Diesel engines?

I need some rational, pragmatic advice because I'd love the 02 Plate V6 with all the toys (as above) and I need to justify spending the same money on a diesel with (possibly) higher mileage...

Oh, and I've got to try and buy a car in the next few days!

IF you've got a 130 Sport Diesel and you want to flog it, get in touch too.

    Cheers!

Well, I can only go from personal experience, but I've run 2 high mileage B5 Passats.

    1. with a 1.8 petrol to 216,000 miles
    2. to be replaced with a TDI now on 201,000 miles.

Both cars still feel/felt 'tight', and I'm hoping the diesel will run to 300k without too much bother.

I've seen reports of diesel Passats running to 300k, and even 400k, if well maintained.

    Hex

Tdi engines are designed to work for about 30000 hours. Take a 50 Mph average and it will roughly equate to 1.5 million miles. Actually thats what vw says they will do with maintenance as per book with synthethic oil. I have overhauled engines with over 3-400 k miles and the crosshatchings on the cylinder walls were still visible ! To be honest, its not just the engine that does make a car, its the overall condition of the car that does make me make decisions when looking for a car. I will take a high milleage car that spent its time cruising nicely at 70-80 Mph on the motorway than a low milleage car that spent its life stuck in traffic and had lots of starts/stops and gear changes....

running 1.8t 20v sport on 105,000 miles amazes everyone who gets in the car ,cover the mileage up & there is nothing to indicate it has done more than 10,000,,its quiet, lively, smooth, rattlefree (even at 135mph in france recently)& bought for £3650 on 03plate with 96,000,(1 owner full history swung it for me),,my 1st vw won,t be the last !!

Hi my 98 b5 has nearly 182k miles and drives like new, with a full and I mean full history you should be safe but do actually read the history before buying many FSH cars are actually far from it when you do go through it all so take your time even with a dealer(trained to lie well) and I'm sure you will end up with a great car Good Luck

Traded in my passat sport tdi 130 a couple of months ago, was in mint condition 81k.with full vw service history.

All I would say is when buying high milage cars try and source one that has done loads of motorway miles and you will get yourself a very reliable car, as towny cars take a hammering over time. ie clutch, cv boots, exhaust rattle problems.

I bought my last passat with 41k on clock and was only 15 month old, all motorway miles, first repair was at 75k with split cv boots.

SORRY to see the passat go, but was time to change.

Oh and the pd 130 engine is far better than the new pd 140 engine by a mile.

183k miles on my meticlulously serviced 1998 TDi Sport - still feels tight & is on the original clutch (lots of Mway stuff). 130k on clock when I bought it. FSH is crucial for high mileage stuff.

I had a Passat 1.9 tdi 130 and in four years I clocked up 171000 without any major problems. The main dealer regularly serviced the car and in all that time the only parts that were changed due to faults were two rubber intercooler hoses which split. One was changed at about 130000 and another at about 150000. The car felt as good when it was traded in, as the day I took delivery of it.
