One of two places, either in the front page of your service book or in the boot next to the spare wheel.

There will be a sticker in there which gives you the three letters codes for both the Engine and Gearbox. It also has a list of other codes which details which options you have fitted to your car.

Just had a look at the wiring for the fuel flap motor and it goes into the convenience central control unit but that seems to get power through the number plate lights!! Could be me reading it totally wrong, but have a look and see if your number plate lights are working.

Failing that the only other connection point I can see tht would be common is the earth, so give them a check in and around the boot.

    1. Open your boot

    2. Remove your parcel shelf

    3. Pull away the side carpeting

    3. You need to remove the right hand side trim (the bit the parcel shelf locks in to). There is one screw under the boot seal (you have to pull off the bottom seal and trim to get to it). There is also a plastic pop catch which you can loosen with a screwdriver (it's kinda behind the light, you have to crouch down and look up behind it to see it - it's white).

    4. Slide a screwdriver (or trim removal tool) all the way round the trim and pull it reasonably hard. With a bit of patience it does all come out but it takes a bit of guts.

    5. In the metal shell of the car there are 2 holes cut out, through which you should be able to see a metal rod with a white plastic bit at the top - that's what you're after.

    6. You need to push the white bit upwards. It's very tricky to get to and you'll need small hands to reach it. Pull that up and the flap should open.

Hope that helps anyone else who gets stuck in the same situation! I have taped over the lock and got myself a locking fuel cap for now - seems like a much better set up to me than relying on VW electrics!!
I have this same problem and I am working tomorrow morning. It just stared tonight. Dunno what Im gonna do. I am a girl and I dont understand half the stuff you just said. I understand its in the boot on the driver's side. But thats it. HELP, is anybody up?

Hello, first time poster long time lover of this site - you guys have got me out of the mire on more than one occasion.

Just a quickie as I was having this very problem on a 59 Golf TDI estate (we also run a 53 mk4 Golf estate - we're nothing if not dull in our house) and I searched all over the shop for a solution. The fuel cover has been playing up for a while, I had to lock-unlock, lock-unlock, lock-unlock and eventually it would release - however today it just wouldn't have it. I was just about to rip out the lining to look for this mythical manual release when I tried - simply:

Locking the car with the remote fob.

Operating the release switch (i.e. pressing the fuel cap cover in)

Unlocking with the remote key whilst keeping the pressure on the cover.

Lo and behold it worked - I then tried it about ten times in a row and it worked every time.

The only thing I can assume is that the solenoid/relay/micro switch is not making when there is no pressure on the flap, and therefore the central locking is not unlocking it - but with a gentle push it is, and everything is good.

Not sure if this will work for everyone, but (so far!) it's been ok for me. Bit of a poor design if I'm being honest, there should be an easily accessible manual release for just this sort of a situation, but hey ho.
