bora engine management system light on, car running fine!!!!???

I have a 51 vw bora, it is due a service in 1400 miles. The engine management system light has come on, the car is running fine with no problem, i usually put normal unleaded in the car but this tank i used shell v power, the car blew some black stuff for a day or so but is now running fine, but the light is still on, any suggestions??

The engine management light covers many issues within the engine. Some of them critical enough, but some are trivial.

Bottom line is that without a fault read you will not know whether the engine is in danger, or if you can safely continue driving through to your next service.

I had the same fault, and it ended up being a faulty rear brake light relay (the lights were working fine though...). I am glad I took it to the garage despite it costing an extra few £££, as it may have been something much more severe.

If you can get a fault reading at home - it may (but not necessarily) give you the answer.
