I have the same problem on my Audi A4 1.8T 1998, but with the bulb failure warning light. I have also checked all the bulbs, and they are all working.. any suggestion?
    Thanks!

I have a similar issue only 96 1.8 t sport. The warning comes on, but oncei press the brakepedal it goes off. Most odd! I can't remember if it was doing this before I took the boot spoiler off ( holding another brake light cluster) I might just go down with the light and wire it up, see if that helps. It's deffinatly a wierd one though!

I realise quite a bit of time has passed since filippowsky said the above, but I have the same problem right now and I echo his sentiments exactly. What is the damn problem? So many threads I have followed are dead ends, the question is asked but there is no solution.
Suggestions please. Filippowsky, if you are still a member of this forum, what happened with your problem? I really would like to solve this!

ok i know this is an old thread but if you are getting the lamp out warning signal on the dash don't just check the main clusters i was scratching my head on this for a while as mine were all working fine it turns out it was one of the registration plate lamps that was blown.

I also know this is an old thread but it's a common problem with AUDI's.

Like others have said, the main culprate is moisture.

I have an 2007 A6 saloon & had a similar problem, rear lights working, then warnings of lamp out (multiple outs), stopped, checked & lamp was out, bought new bulbs, replaced, lights working again, then 2 days later, bam lamp out warning, tail, brake etc... Problem went on for weeks, sometimes going away & other times 4-7 times a day.

Followed plenty of suggestions from many sites till one night in January (cold -1c) I went out to get something from my boot (trunk) and with my head in the trunk I could hear slight crackling like the faint sound of electrical arcing.. (I'm an electrical tech for plant equipment).

On investigation, I found it was the fuse holder for one of the supply lines to the J393 control module that controls among other things the rear lights (all of them). Apparently AUDI feed the control module (J393) with multiple power lines from the local fuse box for rear appliances ( in the 2005 - 2008 A6, it's in the boot next to the J393 unit on the right).

What had happend, over the years moisture gets into the boot area and corrosion or oxidization of contacts occurs and the power (current) going through the fuse contacts creates a mini resistive path on the connector for the fuse making it eventually arc & loose power, leaving the J393 unit with part power.

Now under normal conditions, you will never notice this till the weather changes (like a cold night) metal contracts and connections can loosen ever so slight especially after time. The blade fuse in the holder was still firm but the contact surface was aged/oxidized & creating a resistive path that normally should not be there.

The J393 needs all 3 power lines to feed all the equipment and when one is missing or reduced, you get some weird things happening like lights going of and on & warnings on the dash re: equipment going through the related control module.

Crazy thing was, I had checked the power with a multimeter and it was good but I never checked it when it was colder at night... I had even gone as far as to change the J393 module but the fault came back (lesson learned).

    Most lighting faults come from

Bad earth's connections, poor contacts & faulty supplies...

hope it helps someone next time:

Check the fuse carriers & fuses by pulling all the fuses one by one & replacing them, remembering not to mix them up..
