    Hi,

My mrs has a VW polo 1.6 16v. Its an import (with the pull back roof). AEE0177774. Anyway, basically her throttle body is knackered and needs replacing.

We've had a ring around and the best we've been quoted new is about £250 for the part. Obviously once you add labour to that, it's quite a lot.

Can anyone recommend anywhere that does reconditioned throttle bodies?

We're in Nottingham..but that doesn't really matter providing they deliver. I'm sure if we could find somewhere we could cut the bill dramatically!

    Many thanks

Labour is nothing to fit, it takes ten minuets plus a set up on VAG-COM so about half an hour in total. Who diagnosed it as being faulty? It isn't unheard of but is rare. The AEE engine is an 8v, not a 16v so what is the car? A genuine TB is £340 but they are available from Pierburg but to help you more I need the year. I am in Nottingham as well, maybe I could help?

    Hi,

    Thanks for you help.

It's an R-Reg. I'd just assumed it was a 16v, but obviously not. But it's definately an AEE (AEE0177774), so if your saying that engine is 8v, then i'll take ur word for it. I'm not mechanically minded so.

It is an import though. I don't know if that makes any difference?

We got a diagnostic done at ADC in Bulwell? I don't know if you know of it. I've always took my cars there...so I trust them. But we've had it in at several other places (VW specialist in Clifton, and a local garage in Sandiacre as well) and the general consesus is that it's the throttle body, and from what experience I have, everything it does relates to the throttle body so it sounds about right.

Any advice you can offer is greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

    Hi,

I aint got it on me at the minute mate but pretty sure the mrs has it somewhere so i'll try and sort it and get it posted tonight.

I'm pretty sure it said something along the lines of "throttle body - open circuit" or something like that anyway. And the guy at ADC said it was an internal part of the throttle body...but it all comes as an assembly so the individual bit can't just be replaced.

But yea...I'll get it on tonite.

    Thanks for the help!

    Hi.

Okay. I hope this will help.

    Vehicle information: VW Polo III [94 - 01] - 1.6 - AEE - 45 - IAW 1AV - MT/AT.

    Fault code: 282
    - Throttle control valve
    - Open circuit
    - Intermittent

    That's all it says.

    Many thanks

Is 282 the only code number you were given?

    Hi there.

Yes mate is was. There was another one regarding the ECU...however the guy at ADC said that it was nothing to worry about.

But, FYI, the other one was:

    17978
    - Engine control unit blocked
    - No symptom
    - Intermittent

    Many thanks!

The first code should be 00282 Throttle valve positioner -V601) Open circuit” which could mean a wiring open circuit or a fault with the TB, the later being the most likely.

    “17978 Engine control unit blocked” will cause the engine to die after about 1 second when attempting to start and means one of the following;

    Attempted manipulation
    Short in communication cable
    Incorrect coding
    Immobilizer control unit defective/missing

If this returns, it should be looked into and is usually a faulty reader coil (around the ignition barrel) or the immobiliser box itself, both are quite common faults.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the help.

Regarding the 17978 fault code, the engine doesn't die or anything like that after 1 second, it drives fine excluding the throttle body problems, so I don't think that code has much bearing on things.

But regardin the 282 or "00282" as you call that, that definately accurately relates to the problems she's been having with it, and so I think it's the number one suspect for the problem as it stands.

So this open circuit? I mean I don't really get it....but would this be something within the throttle body that could maybe be replaced if we were to try and have it reconditioned somewhere? Or is it literally that you need a new throttle body?

Again, if you have any suggestions where we could possibly obtain one from it'd be a great help!

    Thanks again
