I thought I would try changing the fuel filter on my Passat today in addition to the oil and air filters. I shouldn't have bothered as i was unaware of air in the fuel lines problem which it seems i now have as i can't get the engine to fire up.

I rechecked the new fuel filter and it was bone dry so then removed the valve and two pipes from the top, turned it over a bit until the fuel filter filled with diesel, however it will still not start.

Any advice on the next stage of trying to bleed the rest of the air out?

    Many thanks for any help!

    The system will self bleed.

But someties it can take a while to get going.

Try 20 seconds of cranking at a time.

    It should eventually get there.

Thanks for the reply. I have tried to start it about 10 times now but still nothing. Can this tyoe of cranking and not firing cause any damage? I'm also a bit worried I will flatten the battery!

I think so. All i did was remove the in and out pipes and lifted the valve with the two pipes connected out too. Replaced the filter, changed both the seals on the valve and reconnected all the hoses. I changed the oil and air filters at the same time but i doubt anything to do with those could cause it not to start up. The filter is full of fuel now but is there anywhere further down the line i could check to see if fuel is getting through?

    Thanks again for all replies!

I changed mine yesterday and was surprised as it ran on fist turn of the key, you must have it the wrong way around, mine has in and out arrows on it. Looking from the front the thermostat is on the right, in and out are left back and left front.

I did take care to make sure I put it back in the same way as the old one came out. The filter is definitely the same orientation as the old one and it wouldn't be possible to put the hoses on the wrong sides as they wouldn't reach.

It did run when i first started it up but only for about 20 secs as it ran out of fuel.

Hi You need to fill the new filter with diesel before you replace it,this is normal practice when replacing a fuel filter.

I'd get some jump leads between you and another car and just crank her over until she hopefuly starts.

I wasn't aware of this unfortunately. I was following the Haynes manual and for pre 2002 cars it said to prefill the filter with diesel but for post 2002 cars it made no reference to filling the filter with diesel.
