Im about to do an oil & filter change on my '99 1.9TDi but I cant face going out in the rain at the moment to remove the engine tray ...
Sat here with nowt to do so I thought I may as well pick someones brains( read;save some time..) & ask whether the sump/drain plug is located towards the front or rear of the beam? Might I get away with removng only one half of the protective tray?
    Cheers

I'd remove the tray completely, it'll only get in your way otherwise and if you just unclip half of it, you risk snapping the plastic clips that secure it in place. I just bought 4 of these from VW for £12, so don't cut corners. The sump plug is located on the passenger side of the sump (right hand side if looking at the car head on) if that makes sense. I did an oil & filter change last week and due to the sump plug location, I parked the car with the driver's side wheels on the kerb and the passenger side on the ground, hence pouring the oil straight out of the sump, then rolled it back onto level ground to refill.
