Hi to everyone. I have recently damaged the plastic front undertray on my Passat 130 Sport when I drove over some debri on the A45 in Northamptonshire one gloomy evening on the way home. Its broken at the end furthest away from the bumper and the damage has been done to the rear end fixing part so that it hangs down and scraps across speedramps etc. I have managed to secure it using tie wraps so that it is not hanging down.
I have contacted VW and enquired about a replacement and I have a quote of £95 inc VAT for the part only. This seems relatively expensive for a smallish piece of plastic but then a suppose it is via a VW Dealer etc.I am under the impression that the tray is used for areo purposes and not under car protection which is why its plastic.
Before I spend nearly £100 on the bit I was wondering whether its worthwhile following the 4x4 trick and seeing if a local metal fabricator can make a replacement for the tray in rust treated light steel or Aluminium for the same price or less. It would seem a good idea it use the tray for protecion as well as Areo. Has anyone investigated this or has anyone any reason why this is a bad idea. Additionally, are there any members who could make one and would others be interested in the same thing?

    Regards

    Ian
