It's a shiny cylinder with a vacuum hose exiting from the centre, mounted on the exhaust manifold in the engine bay.

I've no idea how you clean it, caustic soda???

You need to remove it from the car to clean it.

Once off, use carb cleaner or thinners and then rinse everything with brake cleaner.

Also make sure you have a new 'o' ring and manifold gasket just in case you damage the existing ones.

As for the location of it, you should get a Haynes manual as a minimum if you are considering doing any work on your car.

    Here it is

    https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/a...0&d=1179680191

and mine removed today for this exact job

all that it involves is to remove the engine cover plate and the air intake clap then the 3 hex bolts holding it to the manifold and the lower 12mm nuts to the exhaust.

best take off all the pipes down to the intercooler and clean em out andy . mine had oil inside , but not to the extent of being literally covered as you say . THE worst one was the intercooler on the passenger side , it has a recess and was about an inch deep in black engine oil .
