A3 auto 1.6 (8L) wont start!

hi ya, newbie needs advice

i'v got a 1.6 auto no probs starting for 5months a few weeks ago it would take two or three attemps to start then ok for a week.

now ok for a few days then it will not start at all, even with a jump start it fails to fire for five, six attempts.

makes no difference if in neutrel or park, brake on or off, throttle open or closed.
first thought's were battery but jump start made no difference
no imobiliser lights flashing (though to me sounds like it could be somthing to do with it)
when it eventualy start's its fine for a few Days starts on the button then same again.
any idea's where to look first ?

Had the battery checked, it was wrong size and not holding charge!
fires up on the button again
