Is this normal? Even when my engine has been standing overnight there is still a lot of pressure in the expansion tank. I have to slowly unscrew the cap but this still results in a big release of pressure and coolant spraying out.

    Is this common?

Hi I would try replacing the cap on the expansion tank.If you suspect the head gasket there is a tool which you can use to see if there is exhaust gas in the coolant.A leaking head gasket will also build up pressure in the coolant system, although when that is the case you can not keep water in the tank because of the high pressure.A leaking head gasket can be the cause and it does not always show signs of water in the oil

    Thanks for the reply

I do high mileage in it and on average top up the coolant every two weeks, there is no oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil.

It does use a bit of oil though.

What could be wrong with the cap?

    Cheers
