My Gt TDI 110 has a starting problem when cold it turns over really slow, but after use is fine.Have had the battery tested today and all is ok, next is the starter motor removal or replacement. How easy is it to remove and can it be removed from the top of the car or from the top and underneath and how many bolts hold it in place?
Any help please as it needs sorting before it packs up for good!!!

It is very easy to remove and is done from above and below. If the starter is full of powdery debris, you have a dual mass flywheel problem. If you fit a new starter the same thing will happen again and starter motor manufactures are very aware of DMF induced failure and will not honour the warranty. Most starters now come with a waning in the box to this effect.

The coolant temp sender won’t affect cranking speed. The motor is held onto the box by two bolts. It can be stripped down, cleaned and rebuilt if you have the time and skills.
