yep and it does. just flushed the system now with some flushing solution and noticed the bottom hose did warm up this time. it's not as hot as the top one either which i think is normal? so this must mean the thermostat is working now. fan still didn't come on and i ran it up to about 108 degrees. haynes says the fan should come on between 95-97

There is no fan relay on your model. If the fan runs with the wires at the switch plug shorted out and the switch is new with water over 95°c passing thorough the radiator, then the switch is faulty.

ok, so i've taken the car for a spin today. i took it round the block then out onto a dual carriageway for about 2 miles and it wasn't long before it was sitting at 110. it didnt go over the 110 mark tho and when i got home i let it run idle for 5 mins and the needle dropped slightly. this is all with the fan NOT coming on. but i was thinking, shouldnt the fan only come on if the car starts getting too hot? isn't the needle supposed to sit in the middle?

Are you sure the gauge is actually telling the truth? Do you have access to an infra red temp gun or some way of actually verifying the temp? The gauge senders are prone to failure-it may be lying.

if your having problems getting the bolts out theres a few tricks.. one is a product called "PB blaster" just a littel bit will do ya the other is useing a tourch to heat it up before you try and losen the bolts.. if worse comes to worse you can always drill them out then use a tap and die set to rethread teh holes to put new bolts in
